SELF-CENSORSHIP
Artwork created in collaboration with artmejo x British Council for a social campaign centered around the topic of self censorship in art. There is a lack of concrete evidence on people practicing self-censorship online, and with how similarly, different conversations were commented on and shared. This does not reflect the offline practices of people and artists, which is in itself a finding into an extreme form of self-censorship practiced not only within the artist community but with non-artists as well.

As an artist I was asked to slowly express my personal attitudes towards this issue by starting a visual online conversation regarding the issue of self-censorship and involve my audience in the discussion.

We all have those moments where we are afraid to speak up to avoid backlash. We normally censor our opinions and adjust our minds to go along with the majority. We silently live in a prison built out of words we wouldn’t allow ourselves to say out of the fear of negative reactions. Whether its a personal or a global issue, we often believe that censorship is the best way to solve a problem.

Self-censorship is a killer of artistic freedom. Certain circumstances and contradictions narrow the range of acceptable shared content which limits the ability to convey one's personality, opinions or emotions in fear of being attacked or prosecuted. In other words, self expression dies if censorship lives on. Artistic creativity demands an environment free from fear and insecurity.
